The Israeli military has not commented on the matter so far. However, a spokesman for the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFL), Andrea Tenenti, said that they are working closely with the Lebanese side to investigate the incident.

The spying device was likely planted in southern Lebanon by agents of the Israeli intelligence agency Mossad, which had planted many similar devices in Syria and Lebanon in the last few years. These systems are usually destroyed if they suffer malfunctions or if they have been detected.

Some of these spying devices contain electro-optical systems, while others collect signal intelligence. Such devices are among the main sources of information for Israeli agencies like Mossad and the Military Intelligence Directorate (Aman).
