The Israeli Air Force (IAF) completed another wave of strikes in western Iran and the capital, Tehran, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) announced late on June 22.
In a statement, the military said that some 20 IAF fighter jets were involved in the strikes, dropping more than 30 munitions on several targets.
As part of the wave of strikes, fighter jets targeted infrastructure used to store and launch ballistic missiles at Israel, as well as satellites and radar sites in the areas of Kermanshah and Hamedan “used for aerial intelligence gathering,” according to the military, which added that an air defense system was also targeted in “the heart of Tehran.”
The military said that the last wave of strikes are part of efforts to “degrade the military capabilities of the Iranian regime,” moving away from the goal of crippling the Islamic Republic’s nuclear program.
This was the third wave of Israeli strikes to hit Iran since the United States carried out its first attack on the Islamic Republic in the early morning hours, targeting the nuclear sites in Fordow, Isfahan and Natanz with heavy bunker busting bombs and land-attack cruise missiles.
In a televised message released late on June 22, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed that Israel will continue to operate at full tilt in Iran.
The U.S. attack “did very serious damage” to the Fordow site, said Netanyahu. “We are sending them back, we are removing the threat,” he said of the operation against Iran’s nuclear program, without going into detail on the damage done.
Israel “will not be dragged into a war of attrition,” he vowed, “but we will not stop this historic operation before we achieve our goals.”
Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump publicly entertained the idea of regime change in Iran in a post on his Truth Social network.
“It’s not politically correct to use the term, ‘Regime Change,’ but if the current Iranian Regime is unable to MAKE IRAN GREAT AGAIN, why wouldn’t there be a Regime change???MIGA!!!” Trump wrote.
All in all, the goals of the war initiated by Israel appears to be shifting. It started with the aim of crippling Iran’s nuclear program, then moved to neutralizing the offensive capabilities of the Islamic Republic. Now, the next target appears to be regime change.
