The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) has accused Lebanon’s Hezbollah of using an environmental non-government organization as a front to spy on its troops.

On June 9, Lt. Col. Avichay Adraee shared several photos on Twitter showing members of the organization, known as Green Without Limits, taking photos of Israeli troops from a post located right on the separation line with Lebanon.

Green Without Limits was established in Lebanon’s South Governorate, the heartland of Hezbollah, in 2015 to preserve forests along the separation line with Israel. The organization carried out several afforestation campaigns in the governorate over the last seven years.

Lt. Col. Avichay Adraee claimed that the entire environmental organization is just a cover for Hezbollah reconnaissance units.

On June 7, Maj. Gen. Amir Baram, the head of the IDF’s Northern Command, said that Hezbollah had stepped up construction of military infrastructure near the separation line with Israel. The commander warned that the group that Israel will eventually “reduce it to nothing” and make those responsible pay.

“Recently, Hezbollah has intensified construction on its posts right here along the border,” said Maj. Gen. Baram at an annual ceremony commemorating IDF soldiers who were killed in the Second Lebanon War. “We can see the operatives approaching the border area. We know them: their names, where they come from and where they are working. When the time comes, they will pay the price”.

Israel first accused Green Without Limits of spying for Hezbollah in 2017. Back then, the IDF alleged that the organization established some 20 observation post along the separation line. In the later years, several accusations were made against the organization, including planting trees to blind the IDF’s surveillance systems on the separation line.

The situation along the separation line between Lebanon and Israel remains unstable. The IDF has been making accusations against Hezbollah for the last few months in what appears to be an attempt pressure the group into limiting its activities near the line.
