Israel on June 16 struck the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) headquarters in the heart of the capital, Tehran, signaling a shift from its declared goal of crippling the country’s nuclear program to complete regime change.
The strike interrupts the state TV broadcast, with the anchorwoman seen leaving the studio. Soon after, broadcast resumed with the same anchorwoman, Sahar Emami, all while the IRIB building was still on fire.
An Iranian journalist reported from the front of the burning building. In the footage, he appears to have been wounded in the strike, with blood visible on his hands.
Iranian media reported that the strike resulted in casualties among the workers of the IRIB, although no numbers were given.
Earlier, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) issued an evacuation warning for the area in Tehran where IRIB’s headquarters are based, while Defense Minister Israel Katz said, “The Iranian propaganda and incitement mouthpiece is on its way to disappear.”
An intense wave of Israeli strikes targeted a military base in the outskirts of Tehran ahead of the attack on the IRIB headquarters.
A while after the attack, smoke was seen rising from Azadi Square in Tehran, which holds sentimental value for Iranians, reportedly as a result of another strike.
The strikes came amid reports of ongoing preparations by the Iranian military and revolutionary guards to launch an unprecedented missile and drone attack at Israel. Overnight, 11 people were killed when dozens of Iranian missiles rained down on Israel, hitting the Bazan oil refinery complex in the northern city of Haifa and air defenses in Nevatim Air Base in the south among other targets.
The latest wave of Israeli strikes on Tehran suggest that Israel is now shifting more openly towards the goal of overthrowing the Iranian regime.
At the start of its attack, codenamed Operation Rising Lion, Israel stated that its goal was just to cripple the nuclear program of the Islamic Republic. Later, it expanded the attack to include the country’s missile and drone arsenal, as well as its military industrial complex and civilian infrastructure.
Now, Iranian media and cultural sites are apparently at the crosshairs of Israel, which could soon target Iranian political leaders.
