The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed on June 15 that it had made an attempt to assassinate a senior commander of the Houthis (Ansar Allah) in Yemen.

Reports of the assassination attempt first surfaced late on June 14, with the targeted commander identified as Houthi military chief of staff Muhammad al-Ghamari.

Hebrew media reported that al-Ghamari was believed to be meeting with other Houthi commanders at a headquarters of the group somewhere in Yemen when an Israeli struck the site. According to the reports, the Houthis set up roadblocks in the area after the strikes and ambulances were called.

Later, Yemeni media reported that al-Ghamari survived the strike, although there was no official confirmation from the Houthis.

IDF Spokesman Brig. Gen. Effie Defrin, in a press conference, confirmed the strike on al-Ghamari, without revealing the result.

“Last night, while the strikes in Iran were ongoing, air force fighter jets flew over 2,000 kilometers from Israel and struck Sanaa in Yemen. We will update later on the results of the strike,” the spokesman said.

Amid the reports of al-Ghamari assassination, the Houthis announced that they had launched multiple Palestine-2 hypersonic ballistic missiles at “sensitive targets” near the city of Tel Aviv in central Israel in response to the war on the Gaza Strip and the ongoing attack on Iran.

“The Yemeni Armed Forces salute the Islamic Republic of Iran… as they bravely, willingly, resolutely, and faithfully confront the brutal Zionist aggression. Relying on God, they deliver blow after blow to its facilities, headquarters, and bases,” Houthi spokesman Brig. Gen. Yahya Saree said in a statement.

“The Yemeni Armed Forces, proudly following these developments, affirm their commitment to the people of Gaza and their loyal, free mujahideen until the aggression against them stops and the siege is lifted,” he added.

Since March 18, when the IDF resumed its offensive against Hamas in Gaza, the Houthis have launched 49 ballistic missiles and at least 11 suicide drones at Israel.

The latest Israeli strike on Yemen was the sixth to target the Houthis since last month. All previous attacks targeted civilian infrastructure in areas controlled by the group.

The Houthis have so far demonstrated a very high level of operational security, the best out of all Israel’s foes in the Middle East. The group’s military capabilities and senior commanders have survived hundreds of Israeli and American strikes this year. In addition, efforts to cut the group’s supply lines have so far been a complete failure.

The absence of corruption within the group, as well as the strong tribal ponds between its members and their limited reliance on digital communications are likely some of the reasons behind this success.
