A series of Israeli strikes hit Aleppo International Airport in northern Syria on October 25 afternoon, knocking it out of service, according to the Syrian official SANA news agency.
“At 13:25 p.m. [local time] today, the Israeli enemy carried out an air attack from the Mediterranean Sea, west of Lattakia, targeting Aleppo International Airport, resulting in material damage to the airport’s runway and putting it out of service,” a military source told SANA.
The attack marked the fourth time the runway at Aleppo International Airport has been hit since the Israeli-Hamas war broke out on October 7. The airport was targeted by Israel on October 12, 14, and 22, and was due to open after repairs following the last strike.
The attacks on October 12 and 22 also targeted Damascus International Airport near the Syrian capital. The last attack on the airport claimed the lives of two civilian employees.
Israel appears to be planning to keep Syria’s two main airports out of service during the war in the Gaza Strip to prevent the shipment of advanced weapons from Iran to its various Middle East allies, chief among them Hezbollah who has been launching attacks from southern Lebanon since the start of the war.
The latest attack on Aleppo International Airport came after the IDF announced in the early morning that it had struck several military targets in southern Syria in response to a rocket attack that targeted the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights a day earlier. The strikes killed eight Syrian troops and wounded seven others, according to the SANA.
Israel could escalate its attacks on Syria in coming days in an attempt to drag the country into the war which could help it solicit more support from the United States and other allies.
