A senior member of the Islamic Group was killed on July 18 by a suspected Israeli strike in the eastern Lebanese governorate of Beqaa.
Mohammad Hamid Jabara was driving his pickup truck in the town of Ghazze, around 50 kilometers away from the Israeli border, when he was targeted. Videos posted to social networks indicate that Jabara’s pickup was targeted with a loitering munition.
The Islamic Group is the Lebanese branch of the Muslim Brotherhood. The party’s military wing, the al-Fajr Forces, has been launching attacks alongside Hezbollah and other allies from Lebanon against the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) since the outbreak of the Israeli war on the Hamas Movement in the Palestinian enclave of the Gaza Strip last October. The group has already lost several members in the battle.
The IDF has not yet claimed responsibility for the strike that killed Jabara. Still, Hezbollah will likely respond to the assassination in the upcoming few hours.
Late on July 17, the IDF announced that its fighter jets hit targets of Hezbollah in southern Lebanon. The targets included infrastructure in the town of Aitaroun and a rocket launcher in the town of Rab al-Thalathine. No casualties were reported by Lebanese media.
Hezbollah and its allies have escalated attacks against Israel in support of Gaza in recent weeks. Senior Israeli officials threatened Lebanon with a military operation in response.
So far, the border clashes have resulted in 12 civilian deaths on the Israeli side, as well as the deaths of at least 17 IDF soldiers and reservists. On the Lebanese side, more than 500 people have been killed, including 351 fighters of Hezbollah and over 90 civilians.
