On March 17, the ISIS-linked news agency, Amaq, released rare photos of the terrorist group’s cells in Tunisia.
Some of the photos show the terrorists patrolling an unidentified mountainous region of the country. In other photos, the terrorists can be seen preparing several improvised explosive devices (IEDs).

Most of ISIS fighters appeared to be armed with variants of the AK-47 and AK-103 assault rifles, which were likely smuggled from neighboring Libya. However, one of the terrorists can be seen carrying an Austrian-made Steyr AUG bullpup assault rifle. The Tunisian military and security forces are known to use this type of rifles.

Amaq didn’t provide any details about the location of the cells. However, the terrorist group is believed to be operating in several mountain chains in western and southwestern Tunisia.
ISIS cells in Tunisia have intensified their activities recently, likely to make up for the terrorist group loses in Syria and Iraq. Earlier this month, the terrorists targeted a patrol of the Tunisian military in the Orbata mount with an IED injuring at least one service member.
The Tunisian military and security forces are carrying out combing operations in the western part of the country on a regular basis. However, these efforts are apparently not enough to counter the growing threat of ISIS.
