On September 6, ISIS fighters attacked several positions of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and its allies around the villages of al-Salihiyah and Mayizilah on the western bank of the Euphrates River, in the southern Deir Ezzor countryside, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR).

The UK-based monitoring group said that several ISIS members and Syrian soldiers were killed as a result of the attack. However, the terrorist organization failed to capture any position.

The attack was likely launched by the besieged fighters of ISIS in the Homs desert, which lays between the eastern Homs countryside and the western Deir Ezzor countryside. Local observers believe that more than 1,000 fighters and commanders of the terrorist group are currently hiding there.

A source in the SAA’s 11th Division told SouthFront that they are currently reinforcing their positions around the Homs desert. According to the source, ISIS fighters may launch a large attack in the upcoming few days to open a route for their comrades besieged by the US-led coalition on the eastern bank of the Euphrates River.
