On Saturday, ISIS fighters ambushed a convoy of the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) on the Haskah-Deir Ezzor highway [also known as al-Khurafi highway] in the northern Deir Ezzor countryside, according to the ISIS-linked news agency Amaq.
At least 5 SDF fighters were killed and 1 another was captured in the ambush.
Amaq also claimed that ISIS fighters attacked 3 positions of the SDF on the Deir Ezzor – al-Suwar highway in the northern Deir Ezzor countryside. According to Amaq 19 SDF fighters were killed.
Meanwhile, Syrian opposition sources claimed that the SDF captured Bir Fuwayji, Bir al-Banjah, Bir Ismail and Bir Dawud villages on the Deir Ezzor-al-Suwar highway. The SDF is now in only 3km away from al-Suwar town.
The SDF will likely capture al-Suwar town in the nearest future, if ISIS isn’t hiding any surprises.
So far, the SDF advance in Deir Ezzor governorate has been rapid and stable.
Earlier on Saturday, the SDF announced that its fighters captured 8 ISIS fighters and 6 smugglers who worked for ISIS during a security operation in Abu Khashab village in the northwestern countryside of Deir Ezzor. According to the SDF, the fighters were captured while trying to smuggle food to the ISIS-held area.
