On January 12, a convoy moving logistic supplies for the United States-led coalition came under attack in the Taji district to the north of the Iraqi capital, Baghdad.
A group calling its self the International Resistance claimed responsibility for the attack, which resulted in material losses only. In a statement, the group said that it had targeted the convoy with two improvised explosive devices.
“Our battle with the [American] occupation will not end until they leave our land, the holy land,” the statement reads.
The U.S.-led coalition and Iraqi Ministry of Defense have not commented on the attack, yet. The convoy was reportedly able to continue its way after the attack.
The International Resistance is one of several pro-Iranian shadowy armed groups that emerged in Iraq following the assassination of Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, Deputy-Commander of Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Units, and Commander of Iran’s Quds Force, Qassim Soleimani, by the U.S. around than three years ago.
This was the first attack to target a U.S. supply convoy in Iraq since Mohammed Shia’ Al Sudani, who is considered close to Iran, assumed the Prime Minister position last October.
Pro-Iranian Iraqi armed groups attacked hundreds of U.S. supply convoys over the past three years in an attempt to pressure Washington into withdrawing its troops from the country. These groups are still determined to achieve their goal as evident by the new attack.
