On October 28, two convoys moving logistic supplies and equipment for the US-led coalition came under attack near the Iraqi capital, Baghdad.
The first convoy was targeted in al-Moshahda, while the second came under attack in Tarmiyah. Both convoys were most likely targeted with improvised explosive devices.
The pro-Iranian al-Muhandis Revenge Brigade has allegedly claimed responsibility for both attacks. The newly-formed group is named after deputy commander of the Iraqi Popular Mobilization Units Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis who was killed in a US drone strike along with Iranian Quds Force commander Qasem Soleimani in 2020.
According to the Tura News channel on Telegram, which is close to pro-Iranian forces in Iraq, the attacks were carried out in response to ISIS recent attack on the Shiite area of al-Miqdadiyah. At least 14 people were killed in the attack.
The al-Muhandis Revenge Brigade have reportedly codenamed the attacks on the US-led coalition’s supply convoys “al-Miqdadiyah Martyrs’ Revenge” in honor of the massacre’s victims.
Pro-Iranian forces in Iraq believe that US military presence is empowering ISIS, thus the US-led coalition is, in their opinion, responsible for the terrorist group’s increasing attacks.
Despite facing more and more pressure from pro-Iranian forces, the US remains determined to keep its forces in Iraq for the foreseeable future.
