The Islamic Resistance in Iraq (IRI), an umbrella group of Iran-backed armed factions, announced on October 17 that it had carried out two drone attacks against Israel in support of the Gaza Strip and Lebanon.
In separate statements, the group said that it launched suicide drones at two “vital targets” in southern Israel, one of which is located in the Red Sea port city of Eilat.
The attacks were carried out “in response to the massacres committed by the usurping entity [Israel] against civilians, including children, women, and the elderly” in Gaza and Lebanon, the group added, vowing that “operations against enemy strongholds will continue at an increasing pace.”
The group also released a video showing the launch of what appears to be a single Iranian-made Shahed-101 suicide drone.
The Israel Defense Forces said earlier that it had identified “a suspicious aerial target that crossed [into Israeli territory] from the east,” a term it has previously used to refer to attacks from Iraq. The military added that it was looking into the matter, without specifying whether the suspected aerial target was downed.
Warning sirens were activated in two southern settlements near the Jordanian border and further to the west in the Negev mountains area.
The IRI began carrying out attacks against Israel as well as against United States forces in Iraq and neighboring Syria last October in response to the Israeli all-out war on Gaza.
In September, the group escalated its attacks against Israel in response to Israel’s ongoing aerial campaign and ground operations against Hezbollah in Lebanon.
While Israel has not openly responded to the IRI’s attacks yet, it was blamed for several strikes that targeted Iran-backed armed factions along the Syrian-Iraqi border and near the Syrian capital, Damascus, in recent months. Iraqi fighters and commanders were killed in some of these strikes.
