On Saturday, the Iraqi Army, Federal Police and the Popular Mobilization Units (PMU) captured Akashat town south of al-Qa’im city on the Syrian-Iraqi border. Furthermore, Iraqi forces secured a road between Akashat and the strategic Damascus-Baghdad highway.
Earlier on Saturday, Iraqi forces captured the H-3 station, Akashat factory and the Akashat housing complex near Akashat town. Furthermore, the Iraqi forces announced that it killed and injured dozens of ISIS fighters and destroyed ISIS defenses during its advance.
This large advance came only hours after the Iraqi Army, Federal Police and the PMU launched a large-scale operation towards Akashat town.
Now, the route that has been opened previously by the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and its allies towards the Iraqi border is now fully secured from the both sides.
If Iraqi forces launch another operation towards the strategic al-Qa’im city, more than half of the Syrian-Iraqi border will be secured.
Some sources even expect to see a joint Syrian-Iraqi attack on the ISIS stronghold in al-Bukamal city. The SAA and Hezbollah launched an operation to reach al-Bukamal city earlier on Saturday.
