The Islamic Resistance in Iraq (IRI), an umbrella group of Iran-backed armed factions, announced on October 12 and 13 that it had carried out four new drone attacks against Israel in support of the Gaza Strip and Lebanon.
In separate statements, the group said that three “vital targets” in the occupied Golan Heights and two others in the southernmost city of Eilat were attacked.
The attacks were carried out “in response to the massacres committed by the usurping entity [Israel] against civilians, including children, women, and the elderly” in Gaza and Lebanon, the group added, vowing that “operations against enemy strongholds will continue at an increasing pace.”
Videos released by the IRI showed the launch of what appears to be four Iranian-made Shahed-101 suicide drones. Aside from having a range of several hundred kilometers, not much is known about this type.
From its side, the Israeli Defense Forces announced that it had intercepted a “suspicious aerial target” headed toward Israel from the direction of the Red Sea. A statement released by the military stressed the drone never entered Israeli airspace.
Warning sirens also sounded in the Golan Heights more than once. However, no interceptions or impacts were reported by Hebrew media.
The IRI began carrying out attacks against Israel as well as against United States forces in Iraq and neighboring Syria last October in response to the Israeli all-out war on Gaza. In September, the group escalated its attacks against Israel in response to Israel’s ongoing aerial campaign and ground operations against Hezbollah in Lebanon.
While Israel has not openly responded to the IRI’s attacks yet, it was blamed for several strikes that targeted Iran-backed armed factions in both Iraq and Syria.
