On October 7, the Iraqi military and the Popular Mobilization Units (PMU) launched a security operation against ISIS cells in the mountains of Mal and Yran in the countryside of the northwestern city of Tal Afar, according to the PMU media wing.
“The field engineer [units] of the PMU began removing IEDs and military remnants of the ISIS criminal organization,” the PMU media wing reporter said.
A day earlier, the PMU launched a similar security operation against the remaining ISIS cells in the Susan mountain chain in the northern countryside of Tal Afar. The operation, which was backed by the Iraqi military and the Iraqi Air Force (IrAF), ended on the same day.
Tal Afar was liberated from ISIS by the Iraqi military and the PMU last year. Later, Iraqi government forces launched several security operations in the countryside of the city to secure it. However, ISIS cells are still operating freely there, likely due to the low number of security forces deployed in the newly liberated region.
