Iranian Sources Reveal New Information On The Target Of Erbil Missile Strike

The target of the March 13 Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) missile strike on Erbil, the capital of the Iraqi Kurdistan Region, was an Israeli intelligence center that was used to stage attacks on Iran, an Iranian source with knowledge on the issue told the Tasnim News Agency.

“The center that was targeted in the missile strike is the gathering site of a large number of Zionists, and given the number of people present in this center, the possibility of human casualties and casualties from the Zionist entity is very high,” the unnamed source said.

The IRGC reportedly launched at least 12 Fateh-110 tactical short-range ballistic missiles at Erbil from a base in the western Iranian province of Kermanshah.

Iraqi and Kurdish sources claimed that the target was the new building of the US consulate in the city. However, US officials said that no US government facilities were hit. Tasnim’s source further confirmed that the target was located “far away” from American facilities.

“Some of the recent Zionist crimes against Iran were launched from Iraqi territory, and for this reason, the Iranian revolutionary guards deliberately punished the Zionist entity on the same land from which the threats originated,” the source said. “It is natural that if these crimes continue, the response will not be at the same level, but at much higher degrees, in a way the enemies wont expect.”

The IRGC missile strike on Erbil was reported to be a response to the March 7 Israeli airstrikes on the Syrian capital, Damascus, which claimed the lives of two officers of the guards.

Nevertheless, an Iranian source told the al-Mayadeen TV that the strike was in fact a response to a covert Israeli attack that went under-reported.

According to the unnamed source, the attack targeted a base of the IRGC in Kermanshah on February 14. The source claimed that the base was hit with six drones which were launched from the heart of the Kurdistan Region.

The source claims are in line with reports from mid-February that revealed suspicious damage at the IRGC’s Mahidasht Air Base in Kermanshah. The base is known to be the home of the guards’ 4th Drone Battalion, which is allegedly involved in external operations.

The US, who have been working to play down the IRGC missiles strike on Erbil, will not likely respond. However, Israel could retaliate especially if the reports on Israeli casualties are true. This could further hinder the talks to revive the 2015 Iranian nuclear deal.
