Iran launched six missile barrages in quick succession at Israel on June 24 morning, just a few hours before a ceasefire announced by United States President Donald Trump came into effect.
Some 20 ballistic missiles were launched by Iran at northern, central and southern Israel in the six barrages, according to the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF).
In one of the last barrages, two missiles targeted the southern city of Beersheba, with one being intercepted and another hitting an apartment complex. The Magen David Adom ambulance service later announced that the strike killed four and wounded at least 22 others.
Meanwhile, the IDF said that in the morning hours, the Israel Air Force struck eight Iranian ballistic missile launchers in western Iran, which were primed to immediately fire at Israel.
Earlier in the morning, Trump announced that Israel and Iran had agreed to a “complete and total ceasefire.” The deal came after Iran carried out a limited missile attack at a key U.S. base in Qatar a day earlier, retaliating for the American bombing of its nuclear sites. Washington was warned by Iran in advance. No casualties or damage was reported.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the ceasefire beginning in the morning would bring an “Official END” to the war between Israel and Iran.
The U.S. President announced later that the ceasefire between Iran and Israel was in effect and called on both sides to respect it.
In a statement, the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office said that “In light of achieving the objectives of the campaign, and in complete coordination with President Trump, Israel agreed to the president’s proposal for a mutual ceasefire.”
“Israel will forcefully respond to any violation of the ceasefire,” the statement warned.
Iran’s Press TV also confirmed that the ceasefire came into effect with the conclusion of the several missile barrages fired at Israel.
However, Israel claimed later that additional missiles were launched from Iran after the start of the ceasefire. This was denied by the Islamic Republic. Still, Minister Israel Katz said that he had instructed the military to respond forcefully in Tehran.
Iran’s Khatam-al Anbiya Central Headquarters from its side announced that Israel launched several strikes against the Islamic Republic hours into the ceasefire.
According to the IDF, Iran has launched more than 550 ballistic missiles and over 1,000 suicide drones at Israel since the start of the confrontation. The attacks killed 28 people and left hundreds others wounded. On the other side, hundreds of Israeli strikes targeted Iran. While there are still no official numbers on the casualties, it is believed that between 400-900 were killed in the Islamic Republic.
All in all, the confrontation is not over yet. Both sides have lost deterrence and they are very likely to continue to exchange strikes for the foreseeable future.
