Iranian cargo ship Shabahang sank in the Caspian Sea near Azerbaijan’s Lankaran port on July 26, Iran’s state-run news agency IRNA reported.
The Azerbaijan State Maritime Administration reported that it received a distress signal from an Iranian cargo ship after it had been involved in an accident. The ship carrying a shipment of tiles was en route from Iran’s Anzali port to Russia’s Makhachkala, when it crashed in an area about 37 km from Azerbaijan’s Astara port.
The Deputy Head of Iran Ports and Maritime Organization Jalil Eslami told IRNA that the Shabahang sank as water began to fill the ship.
Two helicopters and coast guard of Azerbaijan were deployed for a rescue operation. All nine crew members, who were still on board the vessel, were rescued. The crew consisted of seven Iranians and two Indians.
