Iran will deliver a “definitive and painful” response to Israel’s recent attack, likely before the United States presidential election on November 5, CNN reported on October 30, citing a high-ranking source who is familiar with Iran’s plans.
“The response of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the aggression of the Zionist regime will be definitive and painful,” the unnamed source said.
The source did not provide an exact date for the attack. However, they said it “will probably take place before the day of the U.S. presidential election.”
Several Iranian military targets, including air defenses and missile sites, were hit during the Israeli attack on October 26. The attack, which claimed the lives of four Iranian officers, was in itself a response to a large-scale ballistic missile strike launched by Tehran against Israel on October 1.
Israel has already warned Iran that any further attacks on its territory will be met with a very serious response by its military.
Warning Tehan, Israeli military chief Lieutenant General Herzi Halevi said on October 30 that Israel would “reach Iran, with capabilities that we did not even use this time, and hit extremely hard both the capabilities and the places that we spared this time.”
Despite the threat of an all-out confrontation in the Middle East, the U.S. appears to be still determined to back Israel against Iran.
White House spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre said on October 30 that Iran should not respond to Israel’s retaliation, but if it does, the U.S. will support Israel.
“Iran should not respond to Israel’s retaliation. They should not… If they do, we will support Israel in defending itself, but they should not,” she said at a news briefing.
Despite recent reports it is still unclear if Iran will actually respond. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said a day after the Israeli attack that Iranian officials should determine how best to demonstrate Iran’s power to Israel, noting that the Israeli attack should “neither be downplayed nor exaggerated.”
