Iran will not change the number of its advisory forces in Syria, Ali Asghar Khaji, a senior advisor to the Iranian Foreign Minister for Special Political Affairs, said on November 14.
In an interview with Ryanovsti news agency, Khaji said that Iran will not change the number of its advisory forces in the war-torn country due to the escalation of tensions in West Asia. He added that Tehran will use its legal right to defend itself against Israel at the right time and in the appropriate manner.
The remarks came amid reports of ongoing preparations by Tehran and its allies to respond to the October 26 Israeli attack on Iran.
Several Iranian military targets, including air defenses and missile sites, were hit during the attack, which also claimed the lives of four officers. The attack was in itself a response to a large-scale ballistic missile strike launched by Tehran that targeted Israel on October 1.
In addition to escalating against Iran, Israel also stepped up its strikes on Syria in recent months, targeting Syrian military sites as well as personnel of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Hezbollah and other factions of the so-called Axis of Resistance.
Ali Larijani, the senior adviser to the Leader of the Islamic Revolution and a member of the Expediency Council, is expected to arrive in Syria on November 14.
Esmaeil Baghaei, a spokesman of the Iranian Foreign Ministry, said in a statement on November 13 that, “Ali Larijani will depart for Damascus at the head of an official delegation to meet and talk with senior Syrian officials, especially President Bashar Assad.”
“The latest developments in the region and bilateral relations will be the main focus of Larijani’s talks with the Syrian authorities,” the spokesman added.
Despite growing challenges, the alliance between Syria and Iran appears to be stronger than ever. This alliance remains the main pillar of the Axis of Resistance.
