The Iranian military unveiled on August 10 the Falaq radar system, an indigenously upgraded and overhauled version of the Russian 67N6E GAMMA DE.

Developed by Russia’s VNIIRT, the GAMMA DE is a 3D, UHF active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar that operates on the L-band. The radar was designed to provide early warning and support air-defense systems.

“This system has high capabilities and can identify all types of cruise missiles, stealth planes, drone systems and ballistic missiles for a range of 400 kilometers,” commander of the Iranian military’s Air Defense Force Brig. Gen. Alireza Sabahi-Fard said during the unveiling ceremony, according to Press TV.

The Iranian TV channel said that that the Iranian military overhauled the Russian radar in order to counter sanctions restricting access to spare parts of foreign-developed system.

In the last few years, Iran made several breakthroughs in the field of air-defense. Last June, the Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed that it had used the domestically-made Khordad-3 air-defense system to shoot down an RQ-4A drone of the U.S. Navy.
