Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) released on April 14 video footage from the overnight missile and drone attack against Israel.
During the attack, which marked the first time Iran launched strikes from its territory against Israel, the IRGC launched around 300 missiles and drones.
The attack, codenamed “Operation Honest Promise,” was a response to the April 1 Israeli strike on the Iranian embassy in the Syrian capital, Damascus. The strike claimed the lives of at least 13 people, including senior commanders from the Guards.
In the footage released by the IRGC, the Guards chief Maj. Gen. Hossein Salami is seen ordering the start of the operation late on April 13.
Salami said the operation was to “honor the memory” of Qasem Soleimani, the commander of the Quds Force who was killed in a 2020 United States strike in Baghdad, and Mohammad Reza Zahedi, one of the commanders killed in the Damascus strike.
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said that the IRGC launched 170 suicide drones, 30 cruise missiles and 120 ballistic missiles during the attack.
All the drones and cruise missiles were reportedly downed outside of Israel’s airspace by the Israeli Air Force and fighter jets from allied countries, including the U..S, United Kingdom, Jordan, France and others. The IDF released video footage showing some of the interceptions.
However, some of the ballistic missiles reached their targets. The IDF acknowledged damage to Nevatim Air Base in southern Israel. Iranian media reported that 17 missiles hit Nevatim and said that at least seven others struck the nearby Ramon Air Base.
A key surveillance base of the IDF located on top of Mount Hermon in the occupied Syrian Golan Heights was also hit, according to Iranian media.
Despite the confirmed reports of material losses, the large-scale Iranian missile and drone attack didn’t result in any fatalities.
Israel vowed that it will respond to the unprecedented Iranian attack. Tehran, from its side, warned any move by Israel will be met with an even harsher attack. Meanwhile, the U.S. is reportedly working to calm down Israel an contain the situation.
