Iran Intelligence Ministry Says It Arrested Three Mossad Agents

On April 20, Iran’s Ministry of Intelligence announced that it had arrested three spies of the Mossad, Israel’s national intelligence agency.

In a statement published by the semi-official Fars News Agency, the ministry, which represents Iran primary intelligence agency, said that the spies were arrested in the southeastern Iranian province of Sistan-Baluchestan.

“These individuals were involved in disseminating classified information and documents,” the ministry said in its statement.

The statement did not specify the nationalities of the Israeli Intelligence agency’s spies, leaving the door open for the possibility of them being Israeli citizens.

The Israeli intelligence stepped up its cover operations in Iran in the last few years to hinder the country’s nuclear program as well as to prevent it from developing its missile and drone capabilities.

On March 13, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) struck an alleged base of the Israeli intelligence in Erbil city, the capital of the Iraqi Kurdistan Region. Iranian sources said that the missile strike was a response to a covert attack by the Israeli intelligence on a drone base of the IRGC in the western Iranian province of Kermanshah.

The covert war between Israel and Iran will not likely end any time soon. The recent progress in the international talks to revive Iran’s 2015 nuclear deal will likely lead to an escalation in Israeli intelligence operations against Iran.
