The Ukrainian Armed Forces struck Russian equipment with German SMART 155 artillery round.
The SMArt carrier shell contains two submunitions with infrared sensor and millimeter wave radar, which descend over the battlefield on ballutes and attack hardened targets with explosively formed penetrator warheads. The shells are not restricted by the 2008 Convention on Cluster Munitions. They are used against stationary equipment, and can also be used in counter-battery warfare.
This type of shells is used with the PzH 2000 howitzers supplied to Ukraine by Germany. Similar self-aiming elements are also found in new types of missiles for Russian MLRS.
