On July 14, the media center of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) released a video documenting a recent ambush in the Iraqi Kurdistan Region that allegedly claimed the lives of more than a dozen service members of the Turkish military.

The ambush, which took place late on July 6, saw snipers of the PKK opening fire at a fairly large Turkish infantry force that was operating on Amedi hill. The snipers used advanced infrared imaging sights to hunt down Turkish service members. The PKK said that several helicopters which attempted to evacuate the troops were targeted and forced to retreat.

According to the PKK’s claims, 13 Turkish service members were killed and at least two others were wounded as a result of the ambush.

Amedi ambush was the latest in a series of defensive operations by the PKK. The Kurdish guerilla group is currently facing a large-scale Turkish operation. The operation, codenamed Claw-Lock, was launched by the Turkish military last April. The operation is mainly taking place in the areas of Metina, Zap and Avashin Basyan.

The Turkish Ministry of National Defense has acknowledged losing 36 service members since the beginning of Operation Claw-Lock.

Turkey claims that its forces “neutralized” hundreds of PKK fighters in the Kurdistan Region. Yet, the PKK’s recent operations, including Amedi ambush, indicate that the group is still active in the autonomous Kurdish region as much as before.
