Colombian senator and presidential candidate Miguel Uribe was shot at at an event in Bogota on June 7, allegedly by a teenager.

Colombia’s Attorney General’s Office, which is investigating the shooting, said in a statement that the senator received two gunshot wounds in the attack, which wounded two others. A 15-year-old boy was arrested at the scene with a Glock pistol, the office added.

Video footage posted to social networks showed the senator giving a speech to a crowd in Bogota’s Fontibon district before being shot multiple times.

A medical report from the Santa Fe Foundation hospital said that Uribe was admitted in critical condition and is undergoing a “neurosurgical and peripheral vascular procedure”.

The 39-year-old senator is a key figure of the center-right Centro Democrático – or Democratic Center – the biggest opposition party in Colombia. He had expressed his intention to run in next year’s election.

In a broadcast statement Saturday evening, Colombian President Gustavo Petro vowed to hunt down those responsible, suggesting other criminals may have been involved.

“No resource should be spared, not a single peso or a single moment of energy, to find the mastermind … Wherever they live, whether in Colombia or abroad,” said Petro, who leads the left-wing Colombia Humana party.

The President also expressed his hope that the opposition senator would survive and said politics should be “free of violence.”

Meanwhile, Uribe’s wife, Maria Claudia Tarazona, posted a message on his account on the X social network asking for prayers for his recovery.

“Miguel is fighting for his life right now. Let us ask God to guide the hands of the doctors who are treating him,” she wrote.

Petro, a former rebel, made history when he won the presidential elections in 2022. It was the first time a lift-wing president was elected in Colombia, a country historically aligned with the West. The President has already expressed his will to run for a second term. It is unclear however how the assassination attempt on Uribe will affect his chances.
