The Ilyushin Il-76 is a multi-purpose four-engine turbofan strategic airlifter designed by Ilyushin design bureau in the USSR. The aircraft is capable of delivering heavy machinery to remote, poorly served areas. Military versions of the Il-76 are widely used in Europe, Asia and Africa, including use as an aerial refueling tanker or command center.
At least 9 Il-76 aircraft is currently employed by the Russian Aerospace Forces to deliver medical aid, medical equipment and specialists (medics and virus agent defense experts) to Italy. The Russian Defense Ministry formed a special team to assist the country in the fight against the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak.
