The Houthis (Ansar Allah) in Yemen released on August 23 video footage documenting the attack on the Greek-flagged oil tanker Sounion in the Red Sea.

The vessel was attacked on August 21 because its owners violated the Houthis’ blockade on Israel and continued to ship goods to the country.

According to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations, a detachment of the Royal Navy, Sounion was targeted four times during the attack. First men on small boats opened fire with small arms some 90 nautical miles west of the Yemeni port city of al-Hodeida, which is held by the Houthis. Three projectiles later struck the vessel, sparking a fire and forcing the crew to evacuate. No casualties were reported, however.

The footage released by the Houthis shows three large fireballs bursting out of the vessel’s oil tanks, sending a thick column of dark smoke into the air.

The abandoned Sounion is reportedly still on fire and at risk of sinking. If this happens, she will be the third vessel to be sunk by the Houthis since the group began launching attacks in response to the Israeli war on the Palestinian enclave of the Gaza Strip last October.

Over the last ten months, the Houthis targeted dozens of vessels affiliated with Israel or owned by the United States and the United Kingdom In the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, Arabian Sea, Indian Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea.

In addition, the group’s air defenses shot down at least seven American-made combat drones over Yemen and nearby waters.

During the same period, the group also launched from Yemen more than 220 ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and suicide drones at Israel, mostly toward the Red Sea port city of Eilat in the south, according to the Israeli military.

The U.S. and the UK have carried out hundreds of strikes against Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen since January. Israel also launched an attack against al-Hodeidah port last month after a deadly Houthi drone strike on the city of Tel Aviv. However, the group remains undeterred as evident by their recent attacks.
