Houthis Launched New Attack Against US, Israeli Vessels In Red Sea

On April 30, the Yemeni Houthi movement (Ansar Allah) reported new military operations against enemy warships in the Red Sea “as a sign of support for the Palestinian people and in response to the American-British aggression”.

Houthi military spokesman Brigade General Yahya Sarea said that two US destroyers, the bulk carrier Cyclades and the Israeli container ship MSC Orion were successfully hit with barrage of drones. According to the Yemeni official, the strikes “reached their targets.”

The Houthi representative noted that they will continue to conduct military operations against the enemies of Palestine and Yemen.

The British military’s United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations center reported damage to one of the ships off the coast of Mokha in Yemen. The U.S. military’s Central Command identified the ship damaged as the Cyclades, a Malta-flagged, Greece-owned bulk carrier.

There was “an explosion in close proximity to a merchant vessel,” the UKMTO said. “Vessel and crew are reported safe.”

The US military also reported that an UAV was shot down on its way toward the USS Philippine Sea and USS Laboon. Earlier on April 29, the Italian Defense Ministry said its frigate Virgino Fasan shot down another Houthi drone near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.

After the escalation of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict in the Gaza Strip, the Houthis warned that they would launch strikes on Israeli territory while barring ships associated with the Jewish state from passing through the waters of the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait until Tel Aviv ceased its military operation against Palestinian Hamas. Since last November, the Houthis have attacked dozens of civilian vessels in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.
