The Houthis (Ansar Allah) launched another missile at Israel late on March 21, in the fourth such attack since Israel renewed strikes on the Gaza Strip.
The missile attack triggered warning sirens in central Israel, as well as in the city of Jerusalem and surrounding towns and West Bank settlements.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced later that the Yemeni missile was successfully intercepted by its air defenses and shot down before crossing Israel’s borders. There were no reports of casualties or damage as a result of the missile attack.
In a statement claiming responsibility for the attack, Houthi military spokesman, Brigadier General Yahya Saree, said that the group launched a Palestine-S hypersonic ballistic missile at Ben Gurion International Airport near the city of Tel Aviv in central Israel.
The airport “has become unsafe for air traffic and will remain so until the aggression against Gaza stops and the blockade is lifted,” the spokesman warned.
Brig. Gen. Saree also said that the group launched more drones at the aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman and other United States warships in the Red Sea that have been involved in strikes against them.
“The Yemeni Armed Forces salute the steadfast Palestinian people and their faithful, valiant, and struggling resistance in the Gaza Strip … They affirm that, with God’s help, they will continue to support them until the aggression against them stops and the siege is lifted, regardless of the repercussions and consequences,” the spokesman said.
The missile attack came after Yemen’s al-Masirah TV, which is linked to the Houthis, reported additional U.S. strikes on the northern province of Saada, the heart of the Iran-backed group. The U.S. Central Command later released footage showing service members operating aboard SS Harry S. Truman.
The IDF has not yet responded to the Houthis’ recent attacks. Earlier this week, the Ynet news site reported, citing Israeli officials, that Washington had asked Israel not to respond to attacks from Yemen. According to the report, the U.S. told Israel to “let them deal with it.”
The U.S. military resumed strikes against Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen on March 15 on orders from President Donlad Trump, who said that the large-scale operation was a response to the group’s attacks on shipping. So far, the strikes have claimed the lives of some 53, including commanders of the Houthis and civilians.
With the Houthis showing no signs of war fatigue, the U.S. and Israel will likely escalate further against Yemen in coming days.
