On March 19, the city of Eilat in southern Israel came under missile attack of the Yemeni Houthis (Ansar Allah movement). Yemen’s Military spokesman Yahya Saree reported that several cruise missiles were targeted the Umm al-Rashrash area near the city, which is an important Israeli port. According to the military official, the missiles hit all designated targets.
The Israeli military acknowledged that the explosion that took place in the area was caused by the strike of a cruise missile from Yemen.
This is the first successful attack on Eilat by Yemeni forces. The other drone strikes were launched by the resistance factions from the Syrian territory.
In addition, the Houthis reported another attack on an American vessel traveling in the Red Sea. A representative of the movement claimed that the US tanker Mado was hit by anti-ship missiles.
“The Yemeni Navy conducted an operation using several anti—ship missiles, which targeted the American vessel Mado in the Red Sea,” Yahya Saree said.
This vessel carries liquefied petroleum gas, and it sails under the flag of the Marshall Islands.
The Houthis have attacked over 60 Israel-affiliated vessels and others owned by the U.S. and the UK in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden since last November in response to the Israeli war and siege on Gaza. In response, the U.S. and the UK launched hundreds of strikes against Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen in recent months. At least 34 people were killed in the strikes. Despite this, the Houthis remain unfettered.
