The Houthis (Ansar Allah) announced on September 27 that they had attacked three warships of the United States Navy in the Red Sea in support of the Gaza Strip and Lebanon as well as in response to recent American and British strikes on Yemen.

The three warships were on their way to support “the Israeli enemy” when they were targeted with 23 projectiles, including ballistic and cruise missiles as well as suicide drones, Houthi military spokesman Brigade General Yahya Sarea said in a statement, alleging that the warships recivied “direct hits.”

The attack on the U.S. warships came just a few hours after the Houthis claimed responsibility for a missile attack that targeted the central Israeli city of Tel Aviv early on September 27.

“This operation coincided with the targeting of the depth of the Zionist entity in occupied Jaffa [Tel Aviv] and Ashkelon, which were targeted with a Palestine 2 hypersonic missile and a Jaffa drone,” Brig. Gen. Sarea said.

“The Yemeni Armed Forces, with the help of God Almighty, are ready to carry out more qualitative military operations in support of the Palestinian people and in support of the Islamic resistance in Lebanon, which is bravely confronting the American-backed Israeli aggression, in defense of Lebanon and in support of the Gaza Strip, and the operations will not stop until the aggression stops and the siege on the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip is lifted,” he added.

A U.S. official confirmed to Reuters that three U.S. warships came under attack while passing through the Bab al-Mandab Strait near Yemen.

The warships intercepted a number of projectiles, including missiles and drones, which were launched by the Houthis from Yemen, according to the unnamed official, who didn’t report any damage. The news agency noted however that the official was citing initial information, which can change.

According to CNN, the Houthis’ attack targeted the Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyers USS Spruance and USS Stockdale as well as the Freedom-class littoral combat ship USS Indianapolis.

Since November, the Houthis, who are backed by Iran, have attacked dozens of vessels affiliated with Israel or owned by the U.S. and the United Kingdom in the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, Arabian Sea, Indian Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea in response to the Israeli war on the Palestinian enclave of the Gaza Strip.

The group also launched dozens of drones and missiles at Israel and shot down at least nine American-made combat drones over Yemen and nearby waters.

The U.S. and the UK have carried out hundreds of strikes against Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen since January. Israel also launched an attack against the Red Sea port of al-Hodeidah last July after a deadly Houthi drone strike on the city of Tel Aviv.

Despite killing more than 50 people in Yemen, the U.S.-led aerial campaign failed to deter the Houthis or degrade their military capabilities.
