The Houthis (Ansar Allah) in Yemen attempted to target the United States Navy USS Gravely Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer in the Red Sea on April 3, the U.S. Central Command (CETCOM) said.

In a statement released, the command said that USS Gravely and other CENTCOM forces successfully engaged and destroyed one anti-ship ballistic missile and two suicide drones which were launched by the Houthis from Yemen.

“There were no injuries or damage reported by U.S., coalition, or commercial ships,” the command noted in the statement which was released on April 4.

CENTCOM announced in the same statement that its forces destroyed a mobile surface-to-air missile system in Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen.

“It was determined these systems presented a threat to U.S. and coalition forces and merchant vessels in the region,” the command said. “U.S. Central Command is dedicated to protecting the freedom of navigation and make international waters safer and more secure for Coalition and merchant vessels.”

The Houthis have attacked dozens vessels affiliated with Israel or owned by the U.S. and the United Kingdom in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden since last November in response to the Israeli war and siege on the Palestinian Gaza Strip.

In an attempt to deter the Houthis, the American and British militaries have been bombing areas controlled by the group in Yemen since January.

Despite taking some losses, the Houthis appear to be determined to go on with their military campaign against Israel and its allies.

Speaking ahead of International Quds Day, the leader of the Houthis, Abdul Malik al-Houthi, said that his group “will not compromise or retreat” from its support for the Palestinian cause.

“Since the Battle of Al-Aqsa Flood began [7 October 2023], we supported [Palestine] with everything we can, and we are constantly striving to develop our capabilities,” al-Houthi said. “We will not compromise our position on the Palestinian issue and will not back down from it,” he added, pledging to continue to support and “strengthen cooperation and improve performance and action until the promised victory.”

Al-Houthi also accused the U.S. of “becoming an actual and full partner of the Israeli enemy in its crimes and aggression against the Palestinian people.”
