The Houthis (Ansar Allah) in Yemen announced on May 7 that they had launched suicide drones against targets in Israel, in their first attack since a ceasefire agreement with the United States was reached a day earlier.

In a statement, Houthi military spokesman Brigadier General Yahya Saree said that the group launched two drones at Ilan and Asaf Ramon International Airport in southern Israel and another at a “vital target” close to the city of Tel Aviv in the center of the country.

The attack was carried out “on support of the oppressed Palestinian people and their fighters, and in rejection of the genocide committed by the Zionist enemy against our brothers in the Gaza Strip,” the spokesman noted.

The Israeli military announced earlier that a drone launched “from the east,” was intercepted by the Israeli Air Force. The term “from the east” is usually used to refer to attacks from Yemen.

Saree also announced in the same statement that the Houthis attacked the aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman and a number of other U.S. Navy warships it in the Red Sea with a ballistic missile and a number of suicide drones just before President Donlad Trump announced a halt to all operations against Yemen on May 6.

The attack foiled a planned “aerial aggression” against Yemen, caused a state of “confusion and panic” that led to the loss of an F/A-18F Super Hornet fighter jet, and forced the carrier to withdraw to the far north of the Red Sea, according to the spokesman.

“This operation was carried out before the American enemy announced the cessation of its aggression against our country, and the Yemeni Armed Forces affirm that they will not hesitate to carry out harsh and painful strikes against the American enemy in the event that it returns to aggression against our country,” Saree said, vowing that the group’s operations against Israel “will continue until the aggression on Gaza stops and the siege is lifted.”

During the operation against the Houthis, which began on March 15, the U.S. attacked more than 1,000 in Yemen. Over 250 people, including women and children, were killed according to Houthi-run media.

Trump’s decision to end the operation came as Israel resumed its own strikes on Yemen following the May 4 Houthi missile attack on Ben Gurion Airport. Two waves of Israeli strikes hit the country on May 5 and 6, with the second placing Sanaa International Airport out of service.

Overall, the Houthis emerged victorious from the confrontation with the U.S. Now, the Israelis will have to face the group on their own. Considering how much the Houthis have endured over the past year or so, it is highly unlikely that Israel will manage to deter the group or to degrade its offensive capabilities.
