The Houthis’ engineer units ambushed a convoy of Saudi-led coalition forces in the desert of al-Jasher along the border with the Kingdom’s southern province of Najran on May 1.

“The engineer units of the army and the popular committees [term used for the Houthis’ military wing] with the aid of God destroyed more than 10 vehicles, most of them loaded with mercenaries in an ambush, in the desert of al-Jasher,” a military source told the al-Masirah TV.

According to the source, the convoy was heading to reinforce several positions of the Saudi-led coalition in al-Jasher when it came under attack. Dozens of Saudi-backed Yemeni fighters were reportedly killed and injured.

The Houthis’ engineer units are known for using advanced improvised-explosive devices (IEDs) in their operations. Some of the IEDs used by them are equipped with an automatic detonator linked to a passive infrared (PIR) sensor, which makes them fully self-functioning.

Such ambushes are aimed at draining the Saudi-led coalition, which has failed to secure the Saudi-Yemeni border for more than 5 years now.
