A commander of Hezbollah was killed on April 15 when an Israeli strike targeted the town of Aitaroun in southern Lebanon.

Lebanon’s official National News Agency reported that “an Israeli drone carried out a strike this afternoon, targeting a car in the town of Aitaroun in Bint Jbeil district with three guided missiles.” From its side, the country’s health ministry said that a man was killed and three other people, including a child, were wounded.

Later, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) announced in a brief statement that the man killed in the strike was a cell commander in Hezbollah’s special operations unit.

Hezbollah joined the Palestinian Hamas Movement in its battle against Israel following the October 7 surprise attack of 2023. The IDF responded with an aerial campaign that later escalated into a full-on ground operation in southern Lebanon. The group paid a heavy price for supporting the Gaza Strip, losing all of its leadership and most of its military capabilities. To avoid more losses it agreed to a ceasefire last November.

The ceasefire, which was brokered by the U.S., was supposed to end all clashes on the Israeli-Lebanese border by February 18. However, the Israeli military continues to launch strikes against Hezbollah. It also maintains troops at five strategic points in southern Lebanon.

On April 15, the United Nations human rights office warned that civilians in Lebanon were still being killed in Israeli military operations.

“Israeli military operations in Lebanon continue to kill and injure civilians, and destroy civilian infrastructure, raising concerns regarding the protection of civilians,” the spokesperson for the United Nations Office for the High Commissioner of Human Rights, Thameen al-Kheetan, told reporters in Geneva.

Faced with unprecedented pressure, Hezbollah voiced its readiness to disarm and even withdrew from most of its positions in southern Lebanon in recent weeks. Despite this, Israel continues to escalate in what appears to be an attempt to completely neutralize the group.
