Hezbollah announced on May 12 that it had used a new type of heavy rockets against the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) for the first time.

The rockets, dubbed “Jihad Mughniyeh,” were fired at gatherings of Israeli troops near the Zebdine border site, the group said in a statement, without providing any further details on the new weapon. There were no reports of casualties in Hebrew media.

Jihad Mughniyeh was senior commander of Hezbollah and the son of the group’s top military commander Imad Mughniyeh who was assassinated in the Syrian capital, Damascus, in 2008, allegedly by Israeli intelligence. In 2015, an Israeli strike on the southern Syria governorate of al-Quneitra,killed Jihad and several Iranian commanders.

The rocket attack on Zebdine was not Hezbollah’s only attack against Israel during the day. Earlier, the group said in a statement that its fighters fired guided missiles at a vehicle carrying surveillance equipment and other technical systems in the Hunin barracks on the border with Lebanon.

Both attacks were carried out “to support the steadfast Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip and in support of their brave and honorable resistance,” Hezbollah noted in its statements.

Also during the day, a suicide drone struck Israel’s coast near the settlement of Rosh Hanikra. No casualties were reported after the attack. Hezbollah didn’t claim responsibility.

Since the outbreak of the Israeli war on Gaza last October, Hezbollah and its allies began launching near-daily attacks against the IDF in support of the Hamas Movement and other Palestinian armed factions in the Strip.

So far, the border clashes have resulted in nine civilian deaths on the Israeli side, as well as the deaths of at least 14 IDF soldiers and reservists. On the Lebanese side, more than 400 people have been killed, including 279 fighters of Hezbollah and well over 70 civilians.
