Hezbollah mourned three fighters late on June 27, saying in separate statements that they were killed “on the road to Jerusalem,” its term for those killed during the ongoing confrontation with the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) which broke out in the backdrop of the war on the Palestinian enclave of the Gaza Strip.
The IDF said that two fighters of Hezbollah were killed in a drone strike that targeted the southern Lebanese town of al-Tiri. It added that Israeli fighter jets also struck a building used by Hezbollah in the town of Ramyeh, also located in southern Lebanon.
Overnight, the IDF launched more strikes against Hezbollah targets in the southern Lebanese towns of Khiam and Odaisseh. The third fighter was likely killed in one of these strikes.
In addition to the three fighters killed in southern Lebanon, a senior member of Hezbollah was killed earlier on June 27 when an Israeli drone strike hit a motorcycle in the Western Beqaa town of Sohmor. The IDF said that the individual was behind drone attacks on northern Israel.
Responding to the June 27 deadly strikes, Hezbollah launched a barrage of “Katyusha” rockets at the main air and missile defense base of the IDF’s Northern Command in Berea barracks in northern Israel.
The IDF said that at least 40 rockets were launched from southern Lebanon, adding that many were intercepted by the Iron Dome air defense system. Material losses and fires were reported by Hebrew media after the rocket attack. There were no casualties, however.
Hezbollah and its allies began launching near-daily attacks against the IDF in support of the Hamas Movement and other Palestinian armed factions in Gaza after the outbreak of the Israeli war on the Strip last October.
So far, the border clashes have resulted in ten civilian deaths on the Israeli side, as well as the deaths of at least 15 IDF soldiers and reservists. On the Lebanese side, more than 500 people have been killed, including 334 fighters of Hezbollah and at least 90 civilians.
