Hezbollah hit a Dvora patrol boat of the Israeli Navy during its large-scale attack against Israel early on August 25, Lebanon’s Al-Manar TV reported, citing Hebrew media.
The attack saw Hezbollah launching more than 300 rockets and dozens of suicide drones at several targets in central and northern Israel as well as in the occupied Syrian Golan Heights, including 11 bases.
The main target of the attack, which was carried out in response to the killing of Hezbollah top commander Fouad Shukr late last July, will be revealed by the group’s Secretary-General Hassan Nasrrallah in an upcoming speech.
Following the attack, the Israeli government issued a series of censorship regulations for Hebrew media that includes the damage caused by rocket attacks to “strategic national infrastructure or to military bases.” This limited the information available on the results of the attack.
Reporters need to refer them to the media office before reporting on them to avoid causing any “harm to Israeli forces on the ground”.
“This morning’s attacks by Hezbollah has the potential to escalate into a widespread, multi-front conflict,” the decree warns.
The Super Dvora is a high-speed class of patrol boats that is used for a variety of naval missions from typical off-shore coastal patrol mission profiles to high-speed, high-maneuver littoral warfare. Two boats of the MK II version and 13 from the newest MK III version are in service with the Israeli Navy. Each is usually crewed by up to a dozen mariners.
Separately, Hebrew Arab media reports speculate that Hezbollah may have also targeted the headquarters of the Mossad intelligence agency and the military’s Unit 8200 signal intelligence unit in Glilot, a suburb of the central Israeli city of Tel Aviv.
The Israeli military has already launched dozens of strikes against southern Lebanon, the heartland of Hezbollah, in response to the attack. It claimed that thousands of rocket launchers were destroyed in what it called “ preemptive” strikes.
It’s worth noting that the clashes on the Lebanese-Israeli border broke out after the beginning of the war on the Gaza Strip last October, with Hezbollah and its allies launching near-daily attacks against the IDF in support of the Palestinian enclave.
More details on Hezbollah’s large-scale attack and its targets will for sure be revealed by Nasrrallah who will make a speech later in the day. The group could also release footage of the attack.
