The al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of the Hamas Movement, released on June 20 video footage showing a complex ambush that targeted an armored unit of the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) in the city of Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip.
During the ambush, which took place on June 14, Hamas fighters targeted two Namer armored personnel carriers with explosive devices and rocket-propelled grenades. The footage released by the group also shows the fighters chasing after one of the damaged carriers and attempting to break into it.
The IDF acknowledged that a squad commander in the Kfir Brigade’s Shimshon Battalion was killed in Khan Younis on June 14.
Just two days later, two more soldiers, one serving in the 7086th Combat Engineering Battalion and another in the Golani Brigade’s 12th Battalion, were killed in the city, according to the military.
One June 18, the IDF announced the death of a fourth soldier in Khan Younis. The soldier was serving in the ranks of the 603rd Combat Engineering Battalion.
The latest deaths brought the number of Israeli troops killed since the start of the large-scale offensive against Hamas in Gaza, codenamed “Operation Gideon’s Chariots,” to 14.
Israel launched Operation Gideon’s Chariots last month after calling up tens of thousands of reservists. Currently, five divisions are operating in Gaza in the framework of the operation.
The IDF stated that it wants to occupy 75 percent of Gaza within the first two months of the operation. Once this is done, more than two million Palestinians will be crammed in three isolated small zones in the southern, central and northern parts of the Strip.
Despite reports suggesting that the IDF was pulling out some troops from Gaza, the operation was very much not affected by the ongoing attack on Iran, codenamed Operation Rising Lion, which began on June 13.
