On March 12th, Greek border guards resorted to another “weapon” in their defense against illegal migrants from Turkey, as well as the tear gas shot from Turkish security forces: massive fans.
The jeep-mounted turbines were deployed near the Kastanies crossing in the northeastern Evros border region that’s seen daily clashes between migrants and Greek border forces since late last month.
Greece accuses Turkish authorities of helping the attempted violent crossings by firing the volleys of tear gas that are regularly used against Greek border units.
Turkish media claim that the Greek border guards are using the fans to spread the tear gas they, themselves, are throwing, so as to not to harm themselves with their own gas, despite any logic.
Meanwhile, Bulgarian authorities opened the Ivaylovgrad dam, so that Evros is flooded to make it harder to cross the river at the Turkish-Greek border crossing.

Greek authorities also began building a wall.

Footage was spread on Twitter, purportedly showing Turkish soldiers landing on a Greek islet in the Evros river, trying to provoke the Greek border guards.

On March 12th, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan added another insult to his repertoire, after years ago calling German Chancellor Angela Merkel a “Nazi,” then saying French President Emmanuel Macron is “brain dead,” now he said that Greece and the Greek are simply “Nazis” and “barbarians.”

Merkel and Macron, who recently thanked Greece for guarding “Europe’s borders” and are to meet with Erdogan in Istanbul in a few days for talks that will include the new migrant crisis, are being called on to deal with the Turkish president and his out-of-control ambition.
In regard to Erdogan’s very liberal use of the word “Nazi”, the Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece recently said, “The policy of the Turkish government to exploit innocent people and create impressions by trivializing the Holocaust for political purposes is nothing but an obscene and despicable operation of misinformation and disorientation of the global public opinion.”
His comparisons of events on the border with the Holocaust also drew a response from the head of the American Jewish Committee, David Harris. Taking to Twitter, Harris wrote:
“Turkish Pres. Erdogan accused Greece of doing ‘what the Nazis did,’ citing border crisis he created. Do migrants in Turkey face Holocaust? Are they fleeing for their lives? If so, Erdogan should be held accountable. If not, he should visit Auschwitz & learn about real Nazis.”
