Syrian government forces have liberated about 135km2 from US-backed militant groups in southeastern Syria, according to pro-government sources.
The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and its allies took control over the Um Izn hills located east of the pocket formally controlled by the so-called Free Syrian Army (FSA). Indeed, this pocket is mostly a desret area with few very small settlements. However, the SAA does not have enough resources to conduct a large-scale security operation there. So, it remains “under the control” of the FSA.
