Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant affirmed on October 23 that his country will launch an attack against Iran in response to the October 1 missile attack.
Speaking to pilots and air crews at the Hatzerim Air Base in the Negev desert in southern Israel, the minister said that “after we strike in Iran, everyone will understand what you did in the preparation and training process.”
“Everyone who dreamed a year ago of beating us and attacking us paid a heavy price and is no longer in that dream,” he added.
Iran launched some 200 ballistic missiles at Israel on October 1, hitting key security and military targets in the center and south of the country.
The attack was carried out in response to the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, the leader of the Palestinian Hamas Movement, in Tehran in July, and the assassinations of Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah and Iranian General Abbas Nilforoushan in Beirut in September.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said after the large-scale attack that Tehran had made “a big mistake” and “will pay for it.”
Last week, Hebrew media reported that the leadership of Israel had decided on the targets it could potentially attack in Iran.
More details on Israel’s preparations for an attack on Iran were revealed by two United States intelligence documents which were leaked by a pro-Iran Telegram account, the “Middle East Spectator,” on October 20.
The Telegram account claimed that the documents were sent by a source in the Pentagon and detailed U.S. observations of measures taken by the Israeli Air Force (IAF) between October 15 and 16 in the lead-up to an attack. The Federal Bureau of Investigation has already launched an investigation into the leak.
The documents, allegedly showing a visual intelligence report by the Department of Defense National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, noted observing IAF exercises using air-launched ballistic missiles, fighter jets, long-range drones, and refueling tankers.
While recent reports from American media suggest that the U.S. will not be taking part in any Israeli attack on Iran, Washington has already shown support by deploying a THAAD anti-missile system along with some 100 troops to operate it to Israel.
The upcoming attack could push the entire Middle East into an all-out war. Iran has already warned that it will respond swiftly and decisively to any attack by Israel.
