Iran’s Quds Force announced on January 3 that four officers of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) were killed alongside Maj. Gen. Qasem Soleimani in the recent U.S. strikes on the Iraqi capital Baghdad.

A statement by the Quds Force identified the four commanders as:

  • Gen. Hussein Jaafari Naya;
  • Col. Shahroud Muzaffari Niya;
  • Maj. Hadi Tarmi;
  • Capt. Waheed Zamanian.

The four commanders were reportedly escorting Maj. Gen. Soleimani. They were aboard the two vehicles which were targeted by U.S. warplanes near Baghdad airport in the early hours of January 2.

The airstrikes also claimed the lives of Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, Deputy Commander of the Iraqi Popular Mobilization Units (PMU) and the units’ Public Affairs official, Mohamad al-Jabiri.

The U.S. confirmed its responsibility for the airstrikes, claiming that Maj. Gen. Soleimani was plotting attacks against U.S. troops in the Middle East.

Iran’s senior officials, including the Islamic country’s Supreme Leader, vowed a crushing response to the assassination of Maj. Gen. Soleimani and his comrades. For now, Tehran appointed Brig. Gen. Esmail Gha’ani as the new commander of the Quds Force.
