Drones Intercepted Near Base Hosting U.S. Troops In Iraq’s Kurdistan (Videos)

Two drones were shot down late on July 1 over the province of Sulaymaniyah in the northern Iraqi semi-autonomous region of Kurdistan.

Ahmed Latif, spokesperson for Unit 70 of the Kurdistan Region’s Peshmerga Forces, told Rudaw that “one [drone] was intercepted in the Tasluja area,” northwest of Sulaimani city, while the second was downed “outside the perimeter of Unit 70’s forces.” No casualties or material damage were reported by the spokesman.

Citing a security official, Kurdistan 24 reports that both drones were intercepted by United States air defenses deployed at the Unit 70 base.

A series of brazen attacks with drones and rockets targeted different parts of Iraq over the past week. The first attack, which targeted radar systems at two military bases in the capital, Baghdad, and southern Iraq, was reported just a few hours before a ceasefire ended the 12-day Iran-Israel war on June 24.

The attack on Sulaymaniyah was, however, the first known cease in which the target was very likely U.S. troops or allied forces.

While earlier attacks may have been the work of Israeli intelligence, the latest one was very likely a response by Iran-aligned armed factions in Iraq.

The latest attacks suggest that a proxy war between Israel and Iran is slowly starting in Iraq. Baghdad made immense efforts to stay out of the conflict between the two regional powers in recent years. Now, however, it may be becoming the focal point.
