A spokesman for the Egyptian military said that an explosion that occurred near a hospital in the Egyptian Red Sea city of Taba next to the Israeli border on October 27 morning was caused by the crash of an unidentified drone.

The explosion caused light injuries to six people, the spokesman said, adding that authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.

Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari, a spokesman for the Israeli military, said that the incident in Taba originated from “the Red Sea area,” in an apparent reference to Yemen.

“In the last few hours, an aerial threat was detected in the Red Sea area. Fighter jets were scrambled to the threat area and the issue is under investigation,” Hagari said. “To our understanding, the impact that occurred in Egypt originates from this threat. Israel will work together with Egypt and the United States and tighten the defense against threats from the Red Sea area.”

An Egyptian unnamed security source cited by al-Qahera news, which has close ties to Egypt’s intelligence service, said that the country reserves the right to respond to the attack. “Once the destination for the launch is determined, all options are available,” he added.

A few hours after the incident in Taba, two Egyptian security sources told Reuters that a projectile fell in the Red Sea city of Nuweiba and that authorities were still gathering more information on the incident.

Two videos posted on social media show an unidentified object in the sky over Nuweiba and smoke rising from an apparent impact in nearby mountains.

The incidents in Taba and Nuweiba came about a week after the Iranian-backed Houthis (Ansar Allah) in Yemen were accused of firing more than a dozen cruise missiles and suicide drones at Israel via the Red Sea. The missiles and drones were reportedly shot down by a U.S. warship and Saudi air defenses.

The Egyptian military deployed some reinforcements near the border with the Gaza Strip after the war between Israel and the Hamas Movement broke out earlier this month. However, it didn’t intervene in any way.
