On July 15^th, the European Union’s foreign ministers decided to impose sanctions on Turkey over its drilling activities within the territorial waters of the Republic of Cyprus. The EU maintains that those activities are illegal. Ankara’s stance that it works within the economic zone of  the self-proclaimed Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. Turkey is the only state that recognized its independence.
