Deep Root Of Tragedy: Francis Scott Key Bridge Collapsed In Baltimore

On the night of March 16, the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore collapsed after a container ship ran into it.

Multiple workers and vehicles were on the bridge at the moment of the incident. At least seven people believed to be in the water, with temperatures plunging to around 30 °F (-1°C). The number of those unaccounted for could climb higher as sonar has detected multiple vehicles submerged in the frigid river.

Around five hours later, just two people had so far been pulled from the waters, Baltimore police said.

Baltimore police said there was no evidence that the ship collision was intentional and ‘there is absolutely no indication that there’s any terrorism, that this was done on purpose’.

The collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge threatens to disrupt shipping operations at a major US trade hub for autos, container traffic and commodities. Closer to the Midwest than any other port on the East Coast, Baltimore ranks first in the United States for autos and light trucks, handling a record 850,000 vehicles last year. Overall, Baltimore ranks as the 9th biggest US port for international cargo, handling a record 52.3 million tons, valued at $80.8 billion in 2023.

This is not the first bridge incident in the USA in recent months.

In 2023, after a car accident with a tanker truck, a large bridge collapsed on the I-95 highway, which runs to Florida and supports the local freight traffic.

Back in 2022, the Biden administration recognized the problem of the obsolete US water infrastructure, which largely needs to be repaired. $ 2.7 billion was spent on the solution of the problem; but the money was sent to the US Army Corps along with the instruction to solve the infrastructure problem. As a result, the tragedies continue across the country.

The US Secretary of Transportation is Peter Buttigieg is largely to be blamed for the ongoing tragedies. Until 2021, this young man headed the small city of South Bend in Indiana, but was known throughout the country as the first gay mayor. Thanks to his sexual identity, Peter Buttigieg was welcomed into the Biden administration. Thanks to it, he was not fired even despite a series of transport disasters. Biden could not dismiss the main gay from the office before the election.

Unfortunately, homosexuality does not help in the management of transport infrastructure.
