Syria has condemned the joint Turkish-U.S. patrols in the country’s northeastern region, calling it a “flagrant violation of international law.”

A source in the country’s Foreign Ministry told the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) on September 8 that the step is an aggression aimed at complicating the ongoing crisis.

“The Syrian Arab Republic condemns in the strongest terms launching joint patrols by the US administration and the Turkish regime in the Syrian al-Jazeera region in a flagrant violation of international law and the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Syrian Arab Republic,” the source said.

The source went on to reiterated Syria’s “absolute rejection” of the so-called “safe corridor” agreement between Turkey and the U.S.

The agreement, that was reached last month, is supposed to address Ankara’s security concerns in northeastern Syria, where the Kurdish-dominated Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) is in control.

Damascus had called on Kurdish forces in the region to take a stand and defend the country’s sovereignty. However, the U.S.-backed SDF has been complying with the agreement, so far.
